I had an unusual 'KMI related' experience that occurred last week, and I wanted
to pass the information on to you. As you may (or may not) know, one of
my 'after work' activities here in Louisville is being a reserve Jefferson
County deputy sheriff. As such, for the last 10 years I have provided celebrity
escort and security to the celebrities that are brought to the Kentucky Derby by
the Mint Jubilee party to benefit the Brown Cancer Center. It is a fun
gig......get to know the celebrities, go to the Derby and Oaks for free, and
attend all the great glitzy parties! On Friday of Derby week, a fellow
deputy called me and asked if I would take his celebrity to the Oaks since he
had heard that my celebrity was going to skip the Oaks, and he had other things
he wanted to do that day. I. of course, agreed to do this. I met his
celebrity, Fred Willard (television and movie actor) and his wife, Mary, in the
lobby of the Galt House hotel, and loaded them into my vehicle. On the
way through town heading toward Churchill Downs, Fred commented that Louisville
was a lot bigger than it was when he had spent some time here. I asked him what
he had done in Louisville, and he said that he had gone to school in a small
town outside Louisville called Lyndon. I queried him about what school he had
gone to, and he said 'I went to a school that no longer exists called KMI'. At
that point I just said 'Class of '65' and he replied 'Class of 59'. Fred said
that I was the first KMI alumni he had ever encountered 'just by
chance'. Rather than pay much attention to the races, we spent the
majority of the time at the track talking about our experiences at KMI and those
people we both knew. By the way, Major Hewes was the first person he asked
about. Rather than stay for the race card, Fred asked me how long a drive it
was from the Downs to KMI. When I told him it was about 20-25 minutes he asked
if we could drive out there and see the old campus.....which is exactly what we
did. He had not seen the Kentucky campus since a short visit (he thinks
sometime in the early 80's) almost 30 years ago. We spent about an hour on
campus where he got to go into the gym building, walk the baseball diamond (he
played at KMI), tour the grounds, and lament the loss of the old 'senior
clubhouse'. Despite some light rain, it was a great visit. Later that
evening, before the start of the Mint Jubilee Gala, I saw Fred, and gave him one
of my old pieces of KMI 'brass', a round shoulder KMI seal we wore on our
blouse, as a souvenir. When I saw him later that evening at the Mint Jubilee,
he was wearing the crest as a lapel pin on his tux. I guess he wanted to let
the locals know where he had gone to school. Fred was a most enjoyable
gentleman, and has a lot of fond memories of his time at KMI. I don't expect
that he will remember the information i gave him regarding the KMI website, so
if you have his address in Hollywood, you might want to send him some
information. I got the feeling he is interested in coming to the next Venice
reunion. I hope I will be able to make the next one and see him, and yourself,
there. Best regards, Mike Keeney '65 |
My name is George W. Thomas but
my friends call me Bill. I
graduated from KMI in 1968.IMHO, this was a very outstanding class which had
approx 34 of the original 104 freshmen from the ‘64/’65 first year
(9th grade). That’s close to 33% from our rat year to go through the
4 years. I was 1st platoon leader, Co-C my senior year.
I have
many stories, (one) of which I will share. A chance meeting with another famous alumni, Fred Willard, class of ’51. Fred, in case
you haven’t heard of him, is a very successful comedic writer/actor in Hollywood. I could list
his credits but it would be easier for you to go online and look him up. I was
working in my chosen profession, that of television broadcasting/video taping at
the Disney MGM Studios in 1994. We were shooting, over a four day period, a
spec pilot for a show called Real
People that had actually been a series some years before. In walks
Fred along with his co-hostess for this 1 hour pilot, Sarah Purcell. For the
definition of “A Pilot” go rent the film Pulp Fiction. Some how I remembered that
he was an alumnus, so I went up and introduced myself. He was very gracious and
spent about an hour in my video tape room between taping sessions and asked me
to bring in my annuals the next day. I did so and he hung out with me for the
entire day between tapings and just looked through my four books. We shared
stories about our time at KMI and we reminisced about many of the same pranks,
teachers and experiences. He ultimately signed my senior year book. A great
guy and a very funny man.
Regards………Bill

Fred Willard radiates a unique charm that has established him as
one of our generation’s most gifted comic actors. A master of sketch
comedy, Fred is most heralded for his quick wit and improvisational
expertise. Fred is an alumnus of The Second City and was a co-founder of the comedy group Ace Trucking Company
which appeared on the “Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson
over fifty times as well as being regulars on the “Tom Jones
Show.”
