The Sarasota County History Center collects materials of enduring historical or cultural value relating to Sarasota County, its people, and its communities, including:
 
    Local individuals and families.
    The complete span of human habitation in this area, including ancient cultures and societies.
    Industries, businesses and business advocacy groups.
    Neighborhoods, subdivisions, and real estate developments.
    The built environment, including locally significant works of architecture, architects, designers, and builders.
    Organizations, associations, clubs, and interest groups.
    Public officials, agencies, commissions, advisory boards, and committees.
    Religious institutions.
    Educational institutions.

Items with a broader regional significance may also be considered if they have a compelling connection to individuals, topics, or historical themes related to Sarasota County.
