Leon Hirsh, '68 opened
up the Alumni meeting with a short speech on the need to establish a
"formal" alumni association. Greg Rohrer passed out copies of his
financial reports covering the 2003 Venice reunion, various
reimbursements, and a preliminary accounting of the 2005 Louisville
event. The meeting ended with the establishment of a
committee to create a KMI Alumni Assoc. spearheaded
by Bill
Victor, class of 1969, Forrest Respess, class of 1944, to oversee the
class reps, and Jim Burrows, class of 1953, and Jim Flora, class of
1962, to handle the alumni directory and all other
computer duties. Several other alumni offered their services
to the committee.

Burt L. Bershon,
President of the Sarasota Military Academy gave us a 15 minute
presentation on his desire to start a Charter Military High School in
the Venice Florida area as an acknowledgement of the
former presence of KMI in the commnunity.
Charter Schools are supported with taxpayer funding similar to that provided to any puyblic high school. They are governed by their own non profit corporate board of directors, however, and enjoy certain freedoms to develop unique programs and activities not usually found in the public sector. While public taxpayer funds will support the operation of the school when completed, there is substantial need for initial capital for the school's facilities. This was where the KMI Alumni Assoc. were given an opportunity to participate. Since we currently are not an "Official" tax exempt organization, we deferred to our individual alumni the opportunity to participate in this project. "I created Charter Military Schools Development Corporation to replicate this as a model all over United States. Have about a dozen communities interested in doing so, and five or six in the formation activities. " B. Bershon Charter Military Schools Development Corp.
