January
Venice, Florida
|
Around the 4th. of each January,
nearly one
half to two thirds of the corps of cadets gathered at the train station
in Louisville to board our special "L&N" train for the trip down to
South Florida. The basketball team has already departed the day before
to make ready for their first Florida game scheduled that vary next
week.

"Close quarters on the train South!"
|
Sleeping accommodations were not the
best!
|
"We're having fun now!..."
|
The next day we arrived at the
Venice train
depot and were met by a few of the local townspeople who provided
needed
transportation to the Venice campus. Some of us had to make this
journey on foot experiencing one of our first bouts of Florida heat and
humidity.

That first day back in Venice Col.
Richmond
gave us his famous "KMI vs. Venice" orientation speech.
Some
of the finer points were about the virtues of good manners,
self-control,
water safety, and not to ware those transparent KMI shorts down to the
Venice beach.
Being free during afternoons and on
weekends,
the new cadets soon discovered the wonders of the Venice drug store,
the
bowling ally, the D.Q., the Venice Chef, the Ringling Circus rehearsals
at their winter quarters near campus (the chorus girls...), all kinds
of
water activities, and the Venice BEACH!
The old cadets renewed those
special friendships
at the movies on Saturday nights.

SEMESTER
EXAMS
Everyone sweated out Semester
Exams which
took place at the very end of January or first couple of days of
February.
Seniors struggled through Hamlet and physics.
(WEEKEND LEAVE)
"to be pampered by our vacationing
parents..."
